We officially welcomed an order of Franciscan Sisters from India into our parish and convent on Saturday, July 26, 2014. On that date, a Mass of Inauguration was held at St. Peter's and was attended by parishioners of both parishes as well as Mother Rexia Mary, the Mother Superior from India.
Their charism and mission is outreach to the marginalized, spiritual leadership, and helping to teach the Faith.
The Sisters focus on social work, visiting the imprisoned, hospitalized, elderly, and handicapped as well as a have a presence at our parish school, Bishop Flaget. The Sisters help prepare for Mass and conduct a Bible Study at the Ross Correctional Institute twice a week. At the local Veteran's Administration, the sisters visit the patients, bringing communion to those who are Catholic. The Sisters also provide spiritual guidance and prayer to those who visit the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry located at St. Peter. The Sisters help at the Pike County Food Pantry once a week as well as visit those in the nursing home and group homes there.
The convent was renovated for the arrival of the Sisters. The church office, that had been located in the original convent chapel, was relocated in the parish center. The chapel is once again being utilized by the Sisters for the celebration of Mass, adoration, and prayer -- a great blessing for all of the community!
In November 2016, our St. Peter Parish community was further blessed by an adoration chapel that is located in the rear addition of the convent. Those wishing to committ to spending an hour with our Lord do so from Tuesdays 6:00 a.m. through Thursdays 9:00 p.m. With the chapel, located in the convent, the Sisters help to oversee that the chapel is secured and our Lord is never alone when exposed.
You can become a Sister Guardian! Sister Guardians commit, in addition to their parish support, to providing a $1,000 per year for three years to support the sisters. Other support for the Sisters comes from the Bishops Annual Appeal donation overages. The support for the Sisters is thus separate from the parish's regular operating expenses.
If you are interested in helping with this mission, visit the online giving site or contact Kaitlyn at the church office at 740-774-1407.
Thank you for being a part of this important mission of the church.
